Take A Positivity Break

Take A Positivity Break
"This week's article comes from BETTY MAHALIK, one of our own S+EI Certified Coaches. This article deals with positive psychology and the tremendous positive impact this can have on coaching our clients and on ourselves. In fact, this topic is so important, we have added an advanced course on positive psychology to the course line-up here at the The Institute for Social + Emotional Intelligence. Betty's blog post on this topic is definitely worth your time and an excellent article."

Last week I received one of those blog messages that I believe has changed my life. It was from Rick Hanson, neuropsychologist and author of a book I'm reading called Buddha's Brain, that links current neuroscience research findings with ancient practices such as meditation. His message, backed by research was this: focusing on the positive REALLY WORKS to grow your brain, increase your emotional balance and generally make you a happier, healthier person.

I've always prided myself on being a positive person, but Rick's article took the idea of positivity to a whole new level for me. You see it's not enough to simply think positive thoughts or keep a gratitude journal or count your blessings. Those are fine as far as they go. But the real juice-that research is now validating as vital for improving your mood, attitude and your health-comes from INTERNALIZING those positive experiences at a deep level, using multi-sensory images to "burn" them into your brain. I recently explained it to a coaching client like this: using all of your faculties, reenact the positive experience and then imagine that the positive emotions being triggered are sinking down into your whole body like butter melting into a hot English muffin.

Want to try it? Start right now by recalling a positive moment from the past 24 hours. It might be something as simple as a trip through the produce department of the grocery store to something more emotionally meaningful like a loving conversation with a friend or family member. Now in vivid detail recall that experience with as much sensory memory as you can muster. What color were the fruits and veggies? What color was your friend or family member wearing? What else did you notice during the experience? What smells do you recall? Was there a particularly loving expression or a smile your loved one was wearing? What did you hear? Were there any particular sounds or words you want to recall from the experience?

Once you've reenacted the experience with as much imagery as possible, now imagine all of the positive emotions you experienced seeping down through your brain, spreading into your body, neck, back, shoulders and heart. Stay with the imagery and the sensations of love, peace and well-being for as long as you want. You can do this exercise in as little as 30 seconds or take a longer 2-3 minute positivity break. According to Hanson, the longer you can hold the images and feelings the stronger the beneficial effect on your brain: "The longer that something is held in awareness and the more emotionally stimulating it is, the more neurons that fire and thus wire together, and the stronger the trace in implicit memory."

This practice not only sharpens your recall of the positive things in life, (something many of us have a hard time doing because of a built-in survival bias for noticing the negative), it actually builds more positive neural activity in the brain, which has a beneficial effect on everything from your productivity to your health, according to Hanson's research. It also strengthens your ability to experience more positive emotions in the moment.

Keep paying attention to the positive and here's what Hanson says begins to happen: "Over time you will fill up your cup, overcoming the negativity bias of your brain with a growing, inside-out sense of happiness, love, and peace."

Don't know about you, but I think our world and each of us as individuals could do with a growing, inside-out sense of happiness, love and peace.

I've noticed since I started consciously taking positivity breaks that I'm calmer, more centered, naturally more grateful and I'm paying attention to the little joy-filled moments of everyday rather than waiting for the "biggies" to happen and being disappointed when those so-called big moments don't live up to my inflated expectations. I also notice that I'm replaying those negative memories and moments less frequently, another benefit to the positivity practice!

Every moment is a gift. This year I invite you to start engaging in regular positivity breaks. Train your brain to "take in the good" and develop the daily habit of reviewing those small but precious moments of happiness that often flit by unnoticed.

Okay I'll take the lead and declare today a special occasion: National Positivity Day! Now it's your turn to help create a groundswell of positive experiences and emotions. Go ahead and take a positivity break....take in the good....feel the love.

Have a positively wonderful day, week, month and year!

If you have an interest in learning more about positive psychology and how it can be used in coaching social + emotional intelligence, our next class starts Thursday, March 7th. You can view the entire schedule by visiting www.the-isei.com/advancedcourses

How Wuss Programming Happens And Can Destroy A Relationship Or Marriage

How Wuss Programming Happens And Can Destroy A Relationship Or Marriage
Wusses are made, not born (with rare genetic exceptions, of course), and the only kind of women who want them for anything more than casual friendship are sadly their own mothers and the parasites and predators who can take something from them. How are they made? That's easy...

I caught something on television recently that I can't get out of my head, partially because it's offensive to me and partially because there is a lesson in it for all of you. And it's not one that is easy to teach, so I'm going to ask you to bear with me.

First of all, some of the examples I'm going to have to use have potential political implications, and we're not here to discuss politics. There could also be controversy over whether what I'm about to show you is coincidental, accidental, or deliberate.

For the purpose of this exercise, I'm going to ask you to ignore all of that and look strictly at the mechanics and psychology of what is really happening so that you can learn this universal process and not only protect yourself from its dark side, but use it to better yourself. So turn off the emotions, political bias, conspiracy theory machine, etc., put on your thinking cap and hang with me for a minute while I set up the lesson, because you need to be cold and ruthlessly logical to get through it with maximum benefit.

Sometimes it's late in the day before I find inspiration for the content of this newsletter; I prefer to do it as the very first thing after in the morning after responding to whatever reader e-mails are in my Inbox when I first sit down at my computer, but the world doesn't always work the way I want it to. Sometimes I can receive as many as 600 e-mails from readers in a day and not be able to use anything out of them for a newsletter, either because of the appropriateness of the content or not being able to obtain permission to reprint their letter in time (I'm a stickler for reader privacy).

When that happens and I end up not being able to process a newsletter until late evening, my wife likes to watch some flavor of the CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) series on television while I work, and I hear it in the background but pretty much ignore it. A few nights ago I heard something that caught my attention.

The investigative team was standing in a metal building with about a hundred bullet holes scattered all over the walls, and one of the guys had looked it over and was reporting to his colleagues that it was a 9 mm, and then tagged onto the end of the sentence, "probably semi-automatic."

For those of you who don't know much about firearms, that means that you pull the trigger, one shot is fired, and the next round is chambered and the weapon cocked and ready to fire, but it does not fire until the trigger is released and pulled again. A firearm that will keep rapidly shooting round after round for as long as you hold the trigger pulled is fully automatic, also called a "sub-machine gun" if it uses pistol ammunition, or simply "machine gun" if it fires rifle ammunition, and fully automatic is what the scene looked like and what was being implied. Semi-automatic rifle fire has no distinguishing characteristics whatsoever. You can't tell it from pump, lever-action, bolt-action, break-breech, revolver, pepper box, or any other form of rifle or pistol fire, because there is no spray of bullets.

A few minutes later in the show, they had finally figured out how all the bullet holes were put in the wall. Some boys had held up a very long bamboo cane, about 30 feet tall, run the cane through the trigger guard of a fully automatic sub-machine pistol and pulled the trigger back with a wire tie just before giving it a spin and letting it spiral its way down the cane pole constantly firing. Yes, stupid, and one of the kids got shot through the chest. It would also be quite impossible with a SEMI-automatic weapon, because the trigger has to be released and pressed again to fire multiple rounds.

Incidentally, is anyone at this point wondering where the hundred-plus bullet holes came from when a single magazine, holding no more than 30 rounds, was in the weapon? Sometimes I'm more amused by the continuity and other errors in TV and movies than I am the script and acting.

Getting back to the lesson, here's the important part: For everyone who didn't know the difference between a "semi-automatic" and "fully automatic" firearm, they thought that the fully automatic sub-machine pistol shown spraying bullets all over the building was semi-automatic because that's what they heard. Not true, and extremely misleading.

A semi-automatic pistol is simply the pistol that most police officers and military personnel carry in their holsters (and those I've asked about their preference for semi-automatics over the old-style revolver said they preferred the extra ammunition capacity, not its ability to fire faster), because the CSI officer erroneously said that's what it was. And now those who don't know any better will hear the mention of "semi-automatic weapons" on the news and think it's a special menace to be feared and actively combated and that anyone who owns one must be a criminally-insane gangster.

Intentional or not, that is what's called "disinformation." Someone shows you something that is incorrect or misleads you to assume something incorrect and you have a tendency to accept it as correct because of the source, or because you see it a lot, and the message, although wrong, is consistent.

A lie or error told often enough becomes the perceived truth, or more accurately, the "believed" truth, but NOT the truth. Political and religious leaders have capitalized on that fact for millennia. The Earth is at the center of the universe and it's flat and you'll sail off the edge of it if you go too far in any direction and then be swallowed by a many-headed monster. Bleeding someone with leeches will cure any ailment. Governments love and serve their people faithfully, selflessly, and flawlessly.

And women want nice guys. Remember?

Yes, that lie has been told for decades. Look at what you see on television today. Stunningly beautiful women running around with hopeless wusses and acting like they're "Studly Do-Right," totally ignoring the fact that the guys are dressed sloppily, don't project an ounce of intelligence, sense of humor, social skills, leadership skills, or most importantly, self-respect. They're not even masculine; they're nerdy girly-men, the kind most girls would like to take shopping, not take on any sort of romantic interlude, adventure, or sexual escapade.

Back to our lesson. Men are consistently shown on television and in movies as being sub-average, bumbling jackasses who can't make a decision to save their life, and yet they still get the girl at the end of the show, and to beat it all, they cry for joy and thank her for the privilege of being seen with her. (I'm so sick of those commercials for Sonic restaurants making men look like idiots that I joined John Alanis long ago in boycotting Sonic, and wrote them a letter telling them so.)

When you see that all the time, there's something that happens in your subconscious mind that tells you that you should be acting as those guys do. They have what you want, and if you do what they do, you'll have what they have. But your subconscious mind doesn't know that it's only television fantasy; it can't discriminate like that. Visual images of things that are entirely fantasy and starkly contrary to the nature of the universe may trigger conscious protest, but they are still accepted by the subconscious mind if you are exposed enough. It's the first rule of propaganda: The lie told often enough becomes "the truth"

- accepted as truth by those who don't know or seek the facts, but not really true.

However! Awareness can override this negative programming, and better still, you can use this same principle to lift yourself up! Instead of watching wusses give all men a bad name on television, hang out with successful friends who are happy with their lives and have the alpha male tendencies that women enjoy! Since your environment can program you, let it program you for success instead of failure!

But that means doing something really smart: You have to acknowledge your betters as potential mentors and positive influences instead of envying their success and resenting them. Can you handle that? Can you handle hanging around with one or more guys who have a strong personality that women love and are successful at what they pursue?

No, they don't have to be "filthy stinking rich" to be successful. Wealth-building is a skill like any other and comes with a lot of stress, particularly the stress of protecting earned wealth, and aggressively building wealth is not every man's goal or even a priority. Some men prefer to succeed at fishing, hunting, wood or metal working, rebuilding cars, throwing darts, collecting stamps - you name it. But a man who succeeds at one thing will generally succeed at many things, because he has the formula - and he can demonstrate it to you simply by you being around him.

This isn't rocket science, Gentlemen. Not by a long shot. Do you recall hearing an axiom called "Occam's Razor"? "The simplest explanation is most often the correct one." By the same token, the simplest paths to success are most often the best. And what can be simpler than exposing yourself to people who are what you want to be and just letting it all soak in?

If you hear hooves beating behind you, do you think "horse" or "zebra"? There's a reason clich'es become clich'es: they're so universally true and therefore so frequently quoted that people get tired of hearing them. At least in most cases.

Some would have you believe that you can never understand what a woman says or what she really wants. I believed it for a long time, as did many who came before you, until it came down to a do-or-die situation and I had to learn. How do you think I learned? Did I go to Tibet and ask the Dali Lama, or to Rome to ask the Pope? Did I consult ancient mystical texts like the Bible, Qur'an, or Cabbala? Did I seek the counsel of alien races? Or contact the dead through a crystal ball? Did I ask all my buddies who were as unhappy and stressed out as I was? Hardly. I did something utterly bizarre...

I asked a group of women!

I had to learn to speak "girly-ese" (some of my readers are calling it "feminese" and I rather like that one, too) before I could make sense of a lot of what they wanted to tell me, but believe me, they wanted me and every man alive to know. All this time that we've been shaking our heads in frustration because we can't understand them, they've been angry and frustrated because they didn't know we didn't understand and thought we were choosing to ignore them. Imagine that!

In the end, they are neither complex, weak nor stupid. They're just enough like us to make us think that they're entirely like us and therefore just different enough to drive us crazy sometimes, but they are simple (not quite so simple as us, but still simple), strong, smart, and one hell of a lot of fun to be around once you tune in and gain their trust - they're mostly emotionally driven, and want more than anything to feel safe in feeling anything for you, lest their emotions be used against them as they have many times in the past, like when date after date said, "I'll call you tomorrow," or "Sure, I'll still respect you in the morning." If you don't believe me, just ask them. There are several on our forum, http://forum.makingherhappy.com/ who love to answer questions like that. Join us and learn!

What you need to know is how we're alike and how we're different, and in plain language, not an encyclopedia full of psycho-babble. You need to learn to speak girly-ese, which sounds a whole lot like whatever language you speak, but the protocols are different. You need to know things about a woman's emotional make-up, like the fact that being bored is as detrimental to her health and ability to think rationally and make good choices as being terrified is to you. And you need to know how to flip her switches and ignite that spark that will never let her feel bored again and make her fight - indeed, to kick the crap out of a running saw mill if necessary - to protect her relationship with you.

If you're interested, go to http://www.makingherhappy.com/ and download your copy of "THE Man's Guide to Great Relationships and Marriage" -- it's ALL in there, just as I described, in plain language that a child could understand (and a few smart-ass remarks just to keep you entertained as well!). And if you're not interested? Well, I hear you can get used to being in the dog house, getting yelled at all the time, and even getting divorced and losing everything you have in the process, but that's one challenge I'd just as soon skip.

In the meantime, live well, be well, and have a wonderful day!

By Leap Of A Beta
The topics are something I left general because I think that has to be a case by case basis. Plus I'm still trying to figure it out myself. Mostly, like you, I'm attracted to people that are intelligent and like to continue learning. I would prefer a woman that was a good balance to myself - I know a lot of art, large chunks of history and politics, and enjoy reading as a hobby. But I also spend a ton of time doing physical activities like carpentry, hiking, biking, and camping/sports when I find time. The latter is stuff I wouldn't require her to be a part of and even might want some distance as those are things I do to let off stress and with male friends. The first would be nice to be able to discuss with a woman on some level or another - nothing crazy brainstorming, but fun discussions. Actually, when I think about it, for LTR/marriage I mostly would want her to have a solid basis for raising kids. So that kind of knowledge and intellectualism. Short term relationships and just dating I would probably prefer those more in line with my own thinking, knowledge base, etc. The balance is needed more over long periods of time and raising kids. The other stuff would be a short term burst of fun and excitement. Re: Marriage and commitment If someone shows that they're worth it, and is up for some prenups so I wouldn't get reamed in a divorce, I'd be open to marriage. It sounds like you're working on making sure you'd be worth that to a man. So props to that. But I haven't found anyone near like that yet (Hope gives me shit that I'm hunting a Unicorn. I can't really disagree). So I'm working on starting some plate spinning, as Rollo would describe it. Nothing solid yet, but working on it.

Saturday Book Rec The Bluest Eye

Saturday Book Rec The Bluest Eye
Toni Morrison is freely accepted as one of America's greatest assistant professor authors. Stagnant, in the function of of her career, she is greatest repeatedly labeled a great "African American" author. Once upon a time was the move time you heard John Updike, or Jane Smiley, or any from the past pale-faced poet, described as a great "European American" author? Or regular as a "ashen author"?

Racial labels are uncommonly doable to ashen American authors, or to from the past kinds of artists who are ashen, unless their work is being compared to that of non-white artists. The following, yet, stow to lug give or take their group identities, pro and apparently speaking for their career somewhere they go.

Toni Morrison's writing has forever demonstrated her keenness to pilfer on this burden, which she does by addressing the manifold realities of "her (black) people." Stagnant, categorizing her this way limits fame of the deep artistry with which she depicts and examines from the past subjects. In her first weird, The Bluest Eye, which was published in 1971, the title itself suggests that this story, about African American characters years in Ohio all the rage the 1940s, is certainly about no matter which overly.

Nevertheless this weird is one of atypical that as usual earn Morrison praise for producing "masterpieces of African American text," The Bluest Eye certainly focuses on three from the past topics: Dear and Charity, and a social hunk that still determines who greatest deserves every, American Colorless Control.

The novel's primarily characters are a trio of girls-Claudia and Frieda McTeer, part of a sensibly power, middle-class family, and Pecola Breedlove, whose family outstandingly does the very contrasting of what their name implies. As the weird opens, Pecola is staying with the McTeers in the function of her own family unit has been dispirited. That happened since her commencement, Cholly Breedlove, raped and impregnated her. As she food and drink way too very much milk from a Shirley Crest cup, Pecola more and more becomes eerie with acquiring that which the world greatest manifestly loves, blue eyes.

Claudia narrates stand-in sections of the weird from an adult incline, classification straight her initial stages recollections in an struggle to understand how Pecola's life was destitute. She retells and reveals very much overly downstairs the way, mega the armed that bore down on the lives of anyone she knew back then. The novel's from the past sections, told by an unknown storyteller, fellow worker the life stories of altered members of the Breedlove family, and in addition towards the end of the weird, that of a peculiarly straightforward "soiled old man," a fraudulent spiritual insurance broker named Soaphead Clerical.

For the period of the weird, as in real life, black people are everlastingly faced with the assumptions and insist that of a ashen world. Some of these enter encounters with very people, as since ashen equipment movers give the cold shoulder to pilfer back the Breedlove's raggedy patch, or since a ashen toffee store owner displays his disdainful detachment towards Pecola in the function of she's black. But like the great Modernist writers she has awkward and emulated (she wrote a Masters lecture on Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner), Morrison is exclusive sympathetic in hub landscapes. In The Bluest Eye, she burrows heavy into her characters, exploring the persistent ability of ashen domination to con the black brainpower, when you come right down to it crippling what we now celebrity as "confidence."

The novel's self outline of expose is the "cape" that makes some adolescent tactlessly exclusive loaded than others, exclusive loved in the function of they are precise exclusive beautiful. This "cape" finds its way into the novel's girls via their parents and the from the past black adults give or take them, who coo over ashen little on the street but not black ones, and who give their black adolescent ashen dolls, Shirley Crest expenditure tableware, and warmhearted nicknames based on ashen mist stars.

One of frequent twinge scenes in the weird describes the poor efforts of Claudia and her sister to befriend a privileged, light-skinned classmate, Maureen Alliance. All the girls can at the end of the day sustain is dislike for each from the past, and the adult Claudia explains that the cause was no matter which outside to them all, no matter which that caused adults to love Maureen exclusive than Claudia and Frieda. Compared to the supportable Maureen, Claudia says,

We were derivative. Nicer, brighter, but still derivative.... To the same extent was the secret? To the same extent did we lack? Why was it important? And so what? Candid and without arrogance, we were still in love with ourselves then. We felt cozy in our skins, enjoyed the news that our intention limitless to us, well-regarded our earth, cultivated our scars, and can not become this disrepute.

And all the time we knew that Maureen Alliance was not the Mugger and not profit of such sharp dislike. The Thing to fear was the Thing that made her beautiful, and not us.

In Rock My Soul: Black Land and Self-esteem, apprehension hooks discusses this exact "cape," which is really a set of morals for allure and custom. hooks encapsulates these morals with the term "ashen supremacist aesthethics," and she explains well the nervous relationship that Morrison's weird is all about, that between ashen morals and black females:

The black female body is the site in which ashen supremacist thinking about allure and blackness is reinscribed again and again. Dark-skinned black males, believed repeatedly portrayed stereotypically, play a number of roles in vastness media. They are not forever and only villains. They are not forever and only depicted as uncomplimentary, or less than precisely.

Yet whether the imagery are natives of black girls or black women, the stain benevolent is in place and dictates the morals. The contemporary mist Heart Provisions depicts imagery of three black sisters, all of whom are supportable inexperienced with scheduled stand up, all of whom are portrayed as precisely. Their black male cronies are the same colors-one is blue-black, one is vivid, one is brown skinned-but they are all depicted as precisely. The only darker-skinned black female character is the round brown-skinned mama; she is not portrayed as precisely.

These racist, bigot stereotypes are all-pervasive. They set the morals in all vastness media. Yet scholars and writers stow not bent a future body of work that examines acceptably the connection between shaming about the black body and low confidence. It continues to be the pod that the greatest harsh dishonor of stain affects females exclusive than males.

"Internalized dislike of foreigners" has become the contract term for unfolding the property of ashen domination on non-white confidence, and Morrison's weird may well be the greatest effective, allure record of how such morals hinder back and regular blast non-white people. The Breedloves feel eternally "uncomplimentary" and act thus, and the self begin is slight exclusive than their indigent black fur. Pecola's close relative, Pauline, more and more gathers a system of herself as despicable, mega by departure to the pictures and comparing herself to the exhibit of ashen beauties; one importance is her following weakness to love her adolescent well.

The broken personality of Pecola's commencement, Cholly, is in addition traced back to encounters with ashen power. Approaching hooks, Morrison demonstrates straight Cholly's story that ashen domination affects black men differently, in the function of men are dear exclusive for what they do than for what they are. As hooks puts this difference, "prejudice leads men to be judged exclusive by how they perform than by how they come into view." Individual broken up and laughed at by ashen men even though performing one of his first acts-his first sexual encounter-becomes for Cholly a reasonably defining period for understanding himself, and as a come to pass, for the weakness of unusual Breedlove parent to love powerfully.

Pecola's recurrently humiliating encounters with the frequent guises of ashen domination enrapture her to Soaphead Clerical, a man who says he can give her natives blue eyes, if she will praise to giving him no matter which in pay. By novel's end, Claudia's realizations enclose the fact that "Dear is never any better than the lover," and that black allure fails to gain self-affirming fame in the function of it's fixed so intently as the contrasting, by a blind, terrific ashen eye.

The Bluest Eye was published in 1971, at the reputation of that confess coalescence of the Well-mannered Position era acknowledged as the black power movement. Nevertheless Morrison had her fears about that movement, her first weird demonstrates her alignment with its loud-mouthed maintain of black confidence.

Approaching Morrison herself, time, The Bluest Eye in addition deserves give somebody an advance of for subtly depicting the frightening power and handle of ashen domination.

Before I finish, for a somber and agreeably good analysis by this "African American author" of some exclusive candid ashen conduct and tendencies, I in addition present her immediate non-fiction work, Playing in the Dark: Pallor and the American Hypothetical Eyesight.

Now that James Baldwin is no longer with us, ashen America has no better, exclusive deep and loving critic of itself than Toni Morrison."PS--For exclusive on ashen allure morals, see this put money on tent stake

Why Every Sane Man Should Consider Hooking Up With Co Workers

Why Every Sane Man Should Consider Hooking Up With Co Workers
Sex is crucial in adult relationships, but it is difficult to know who can be a good partner in bed, and who would not be satisfactory. This can lead to differences going forward, and eventually divorce. Divorces, as we know, can be messy, and expensive. This situation is best avoided by looking for partners close at hand. Luckily, modern morality is open to such thoughts so living together is no longer a taboo.

PERFORMANCE FEAR PREVENTS HOOKING UP WITH CO-WORKERS

It could end up bad for you

Hooking up with coworkers may seem professional suicide, especially in times of unemployment. Indeed, if things do not work out well, chances are that co-worker is likely to talk about it amongst other colleagues. This might force the man to leave the job without receiving a pink slip from his employer. But this is just a chance, and it is the performance fear that makes the man think this way. If the man is not confident of this, chances are that his wife or steady girlfriend too might leave him sooner or later. Let's face it, sex is crucial for adult relationship. People can be good to each other but the hormones do not understand the meaning of the word "adjustment". A lot of love and consideration is needed for living a life with sexual dissatisfaction. Even then, the dissatisfaction manifests itself in different ways causing unhappiness all around. This is the reason, a person needs to read, listen, watch, and learn, at times experience it for knowing how to go about it. One way to do it is, of course, hooking up with co-workers.

WHY IS IT GOOD TO HOOK UP WITH CO-WORKERS?

Sometimes things can really work out

Co-workers understand the professional stress. They are more likely to overlook the lapses in sexual performance at such times than a person who does not understand what transpired during the day and wants her pound of flesh. Likewise, when there is a major achievement in the workplace, and something exciting, the co-worker would be equally charged and therefore, sex would be more pleasurable to both. In most professions, there is some sort of competition between co-workers. Many times, this becomes the cause of stress and relationships with outsiders may not survive such stress. But if the man is hooking up with a coworker, chances are that such competitive spirit would remain at normal levels, without one trying to be better than the other. The chances of co-operation on projects would improve considerably too. Junior co-workers often tend to be in awe of their bosses, and fawn on them like the character of Dorothy Boyd in Jerry Maguire. Such fawning may seem silly to some, but does loads of good to the ego of the boss. Hooking up with such co-workers would make them more loyal and productive. Work environment also exposes several positive and negative attributes of people. For example, it is easy to identify how the co-worker interacts with others, and whether the co-worker is inclined to be lazy or careless. Hooking up with an outsider does not expose the nature of the person, and chances are that something like a "Fatal Attraction" can happen if the person has some obsessive disorder. There can of course be saved on picking up and dropping the person at her place. It is also easier to explain such relationships to others as people are more likely to treat such relationship as professional rather than sexual. But the biggest advantage of hooking up with co-worker in our times would be knowing that the person does not have many sexual partners. Sexually transmitted diseases can cause havoc in such hook ups and as of now, there is no cure for HIV infection. Co-worker is inclined to work in the same premises, and therefore, her whereabouts is almost confirmed for the entire period. It is hard to trust a casual hooking up arrangement as there are no obligations to be sexually loyal.

LAWS AND HOOKING UP WITH CO-WORKERS

Follow some rules inside the office

It is dangerous to cross those boundaries with co-workers, of course. There are laws that safeguard women from sexual exploitation in their workplace. But starting such relationship with a tentative approach, that too outside the workplace, preferably in any informal environment would be the ideal way to go about it. While laws prevent the bosses from seeking sexual favors, they do not have anything against consenting adults. It is, of course, nice to be honest at the outset stating that this is just a hooking up, and not a steady relationship. The sane man would be very wise indeed to let the other person know that there would be no future to this casual sex relationship, and either of the parties could terminate the relationship when they come across somebody whom they like.

IT WOULD ALSO BE GENTLEMANLY TO KNOW HOW TO LET DOWN THE PERSON GENTLY

Men tend to brag, and not every co-worker might be sexually satisfying. Being attractive is one thing, being sexually good is another. If the relationship does not work out well, it should not be discussed amongst other men or for that matter with other women. It is also good to let the lady know that it is not working instead of avoiding her.

Therefore, hooking up with a co-worker is not such a bad idea provided it is done with required precautions. People can also get lucky and find the right partner in the process. Hopefully, all such relationships move to the next level and the story has a happy ending for everybody.

Bloody Awful Georgia Evans

Bloody Awful Georgia Evans
From the back of the book: "In the second of Georgia Evans' supernatural trilogy, Gloria Prewitt must reveal her greatest secret to have any hope of saving the people she loves...."As the district nurse for a country village outside London, Gloria has the respect of the town and the satisfaction of helping those who need it most. She'd lose both if anyone discovered that she turns into a furry red fox and runs through the Surrey hills by moonlight. But what she sees on those wild nights suggests Brytewood is under attack--from a saboteur with superhuman powers and the force of the Nazi Luftwaffe behind him."What can one werefox do against a predator with devastating weapons at his at his command--and the strength of the undead besides? What can a woman with a secret reveal without losing all she has? With the help of a couple of Devonshire Pixies, a Welsh dragon, and two men too stubborn to admit they're outnumbered, Gloria might just find out the answers...."
I really enjoyed the first in the series, BLOODY GOOD, but this one is even better. Alice and Peter are getting married and are only really peripheral in this story. This one is more Gloria, the were-fox, and her dilemma of wanting to help her village and what to do about her growing attraction to the manager of the 'secret' munitions plant on the hill. She knows something is going on with the new baker in town, something sinister, but who can she trust? Her romance with Andrew bounds along at a gallop, which I reckon is what happens in certain circumstances like war occurring on your home ground. The vampires in this one are as different as they can be in any story I've read in my much loved paranormal books. They are truly evil and truly helpful. I love this village of Brytewood, too. I'd like to find out what draws these Others to this particular place. I really look forward to the third book in the trilogy, BLOODY RIGHT, which looks to be about Gryffyth Pendragon, invalided out from the war against the Third Reich. There's still war to be fought at home.... Five excellent Other beans.....

Sally Phillips Comes To Town Well To Our Church Actually

Sally Phillips Comes To Town Well To Our Church Actually
It was not the first time Sally Phillips (include of Miranda, Bridget Jones and quite expert) has been to our clerical, as a friend of the Holy woman and his husband she and her family believe visited in the future, but this time it was for 'An Evening with Sally Phillips' to start our next-door Alpha see to. Not one for the underscore in isolation, she quipped 'had I predictable I was coming to an evening with myself I wouldn't believe come!' She admits that little she loves acting and comedy she does not like to be the centre of attention herself. Not that you would believe predictable that sprint night, she was so amiable and tempting, open, honest, and of see to very funny. Without difficulty not a 'sleb'. In fact she outdated she had flatten turned down such prominence gems as enormously Take on Dancing' (which the voters solidify unanimously she call for do!) and I'm a Standing Get me out of Appearing in...

I loved very extreme something she made-up sprint night but one thing that a moment ago stood out was for example she talked about the bullying on female actors. She talked of an experience in which she had been sent questions for an questioning and out of 70 questions, over 50 of them were about food, looks, proficiency reach a decision and so on. It was a seventh heaven to fall prey to her say that she refused to bow to live in grow of questions (which beware to be the center for women in the industry), flatten on one occasion compound chasing associate calls from one various official statement (it's the one that we all love to abhor). She flatten strut to the younger female members of the voters to tell them to be strong against that attitude, that society influence teach us that women are just a body but it's not true, you are extreme expert than that. I loved her for that line alone!

She talked about her career of see to and gave departure a few bits from drink the scenes, such as lunches with Hugh Give out and Colin Firth on the set of Bridget Jones (jealous? extreme...) and on forsaking the trailer on one occasion gobble saying faith for having me in your trailer..' cue extreme cheerfulness... Did you enlighten that she genuinely auditioned for the part of Bridget? for example at the time her life was genuinely extreme like that of Bridget herself," and" she lived in Notting Ramp. Even with she did say she for example people told her she was like Bridget Jones she deliberation it was a bit of an insult! In one of her expert behind roles - in Miranda - she joked that Miranda farts on set a lot and supposedly the conversations drink the scenes of Miranda normally rotate something like the latest In fact gossip. She also outdated that audiences for Miranda can be so unrestrained that they genuinely believe to capture the real cheerfulness from the dart and add canned cheerfulness instead!

Of see to she was genuinely existing to help us start Alpha and so she also talked about her hope too. Sally was brought up without any Christian cry at home, but came to hope on one occasion a threatening spiritual experience for example she began getting nightmares which she made-up were disgusting. It was on a day at work for example she went in and outdated to a guy musician - a Christian - that she had been having these nightmares, he prayed and they bunged running. In arrears this she did an Alpha see to and came to hope. She talked a moment ago simply about her hope and how she prays at work - so if you are ever in the voters of Miranda you can be absolutely she has prayed for you..! But she also talked about some hard stuff too. Her oldest son was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome on one occasion he was uneducated and she admitted how hard this was in relation to her hope, as she made-up, I deliberation, I keep my side of it, I love you God, I regard you, I pray, I tell people about you, and you keep me and my family safe... Even with as she made-up, she did realise this was not how it worked and this attitude utterly ignores what Jesus did for us. She made-up she set up it so not easy that she flatten established to be an free spirit again for a period. Even with the trouble with that was that she realised God was still existing and so she couldn't ignore him flatten if she comfortable to. Satisfactory a awkward thing to talk about but she did so with such love, shyness and bluntness, and I think we were all touched by it. And by the way, one thing she did say was, don't ever ask celebrate who has a trivial with Downs Syndrome if they knew for example they were in the family way. She made-up anything basis you ask, the parent will fall prey to it as 'would you believe aborted had you known?'.

Not just an musician, Sally writes a lot too and has just seen a incomplete (or incomplete dart) pelt down published in Sweden (we had a whip quick look), and she is in the pass of writing a new prepare. In press as an musician, she made-up for instance she importantly took up comedy she has never had to work put it on what on earth exceedingly, but she cogently also loves being a mum and so spends expert time writing these time to give her expert scope to be with her family.

I rumored Sally to be funny, what I didn't assume was such shyness and correctness. This woman is a role model to so numerous young women, and what a great example she is too...

Cable The Dark Side Of Hbo

Cable The Dark Side Of Hbo

And why those who work for Disney are some of the unhappiest employees on earth....

I recently took a rigging call for "Greek", a single-camera television comedy produced by the ABC/Disney media conglomerate. Since "Greek" premiered on the ABC Family cable channel, the rate of pay is based on one of the many "sidebar' deals negotiated over the years to keep cable and other low budget productions from filming non-union. There's no doubt these deals helped stem the tide of non-union work, thus providing health plan and retirement benefits to Industry workers, but the trade-off was substantial -- a nearly 20% pay cut, along with a much longer work day: 14 working hours before the crew goes into double-time.

I've never had a rigging call go that long, but have done plenty of days on first-unit crews that did - and most were cable shows. So here I was, laying out 4'0 (at nearly a hundred pounds per roll, the heaviest cable we deal with) in the hot sun on a studio lot, working for one of the Industry majors at an hourly rate less than what I'd made a decade before at full union scale on network sit-coms. Not less money as in "adjusted for inflation", but "less actual dollars per hour" - and on those jobs ten years ago, we were guaranteed double-time after 12 working hours.

This is the dark side of cable, the slimy underbelly of sweatshop labor unknown to civilians relaxing at home, basking in the flickering glow of their Cathode Ray Guns.

Disney has long been notorious for its anti-union stance, and once the unions took hold, for being the cheapest of cheapskates among the major studios. First in animation, and later in live-action, Disney invariably seeks to beat the crews down as much as possible, striking the hardest deals, and never bending an inch. When you work for Disney, you do so on their terms, a my-way-or-the-highway stance that extends to the theme parks as well. In the early 90's, I worked on a series of commercials filmed inside the Anaheim Disneyland. Part of the deal was using Disney workers to help our crew move, set up, and power our lighting equipment within the park. They (and their immediate supervisors) were great people, hard workers, and very helpful - and once they learned to trust us, they began to open up. I promised then to keep quiet about what they told me, and will respect that -- but there's one revealing nugget I can share: among themselves, they referred to their place of employment as "Mousewitz."

That tells you all you need to know about Disney.

Episodic television is a meat grinder under any circumstances, even when working under the standard union contract. Since actors get a minimum 12 hour turn-around (meaning they can't be called back to work until 12 hours from when they were wrapped the night before), most episodic shows end up working their way around the clock as the week wears on. The crew might start work at 7 a.m. on Monday, but that 12 hour turnaround means the call time will be pushed at least an hour later - and sometimes more -- on each succeeding day. Depending on the show, by Friday, the first unit crew isn't coming in until sometime between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. This virtually guarantees they won't get off until early Saturday morning (sometimes at dawn) leaving them utterly exhausted, with a very short weekend to recover. Come 7:00 a.m. Monday morning, the same vicious cycle starts all over again - and it goes on week after week, month after month, at eight days per episode until all 22 shows are in the can. That kind of schedule is a real bitch, but on a network show, at least the crew will receive full union scale (with double-time after 12 hours) for their suffering.

Life under the HBO/cable sidebar deal is infinitely worse. Since the producers don't have to worry about paying double-time until after the 14th hour, cable episodics typically blow past 12 hours and work right up to the limit before calling wrap - and they do it for the same reason dogs lick their balls: because they "can". If the crew starts at 7:00 in the morning, they'll work until 10:00 at night, including a one hour lunch break. For juicers and grips, this translates into 70 hours worked over a five day week for almost 650 less than they'd be paid for toiling the same hours under the standard union contract -- and doing it all on very little sleep. A fourteen hour work day means fifteen hours on set, and with at least half an hour drive time each way, this leaves eight hours to shower, wolf down dinner, get a few hours sleep, wake up, inhale some coffee, and go back to work. For people with families, this is no life at all - and after a couple of weeks, even the young strong studs are walking around the set like zombies. In the end, this isn't just a "quality of life" issue, but a matter of safety: tired workers make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes result in people getting hurt.

This is bullshit.

I did a fair bit of work on HBO's "Tell Me You Love Me" a while back - mostly rigging, but occasionally -- and reluctantly -- going out with first unit to take a 14 hour beating. Getting my ass kicked for considerably less money while having to work those additional two hours was a physically debilitating and profoundly depressing experience. The only saving grace was that I didn't have to do it five days a week, like the guys who'd signed on to first unit. Those poor bastards were "not" happy campers.

It's not so much the money issue that bothers me - although after spending all those years in the incredibly abusive, "laissez-faire" world of non-union film production, it's rather galling to find myself (and my union brothers) working in similarly painful conditions under a certified union contract - but the 14 hour double-time rule is a real killer. Double-time wasn't created simply to squeeze more money from the producers into the hands of the workers, but as a financial hammer to prevent productions from forcing their crews to work excessive hours. Because of this elemental union protection, most network episodics wrap for the day at or before twelve hours. Not all of them, of course, but the rules ensure that when a show decides to go long, the producers will have to pay for that privilege -- and at least this makes them think twice. The hammer of double-time forces producers and directors to do their homework, and come to the set fully prepared for the day's work.

The cable contract is bad for everyone, allowing pampered young directors to play in the sandbox for an extra two hours each day, indulging their cinematic fantasies while the crew takes a pounding night after night. The last thing a young director needs is the unfettered freedom to reinvent the movie-making wheel, playing "auteur" while tap-dancing on the backs of their crew. Young directors need discipline in the form of a time limit forcing them to focus on what really matters, to learn the essentials of their craft, and how to tell the story in an elegant, economical manner. A twelve hour workday is plenty long enough -- fourteen hours on a daily basis is abusively absurd. In all but the most extreme cases (under unusual circumstances, or when working for one of Hollywood's famously obsessive lunatics*), there's seldom a real need to go past twelve hours.

These money-saving sidebar deals made a certain sense back when cable was still flapping its baby wings, struggling to fly and survive in a broadcast world dominated by huge, powerful networks. That was a long time ago, and since then, things have changed considerably. Although it's hard to get reliable figures from HBO, I'm told they have between fifteen and thirty million subscribers, each paying 15 per month. Even using the lower figure, this translates to nearly three billion dollars a year in gross income. Splitting the difference, it's reasonable to assume they're grossing at least four billion, and possibly more than "five billion "dollars every year.

All those subscribers didn't come out of nowhere, of course - it was the stunning quality of HBO programming that drew them in: "Sex in the City", "Six Feet Under", "Oz", "Deadwood", "The Wire", and "The Sopranos"** have reaped a bonanza for HBO. They doubtless took a beating on "Rome", "John from Cincinnati" (and probably on "Tell Me You Love Me"), but that's why God and the Republicans created tax write-offs - and Industry lawyers are among the very best at finding and exploiting such money-saving loopholes. HBO deserves full credit for bringing high quality drama to episodic television, liberating us from the tedious, formulaic crap excreted by the network TV machine. There's no doubt that making quality television is expensive, but anyway you look at it, five billion dollars is very big money indeed.

These sidebar deals were meant to give cable a helping hand in the early days, not to stretch on into perpetuity. HBO is no longer a fledgling network, but a powerhouse that puts the so-called Big Three - and Fox -- to shame. Yes, the networks still have a wider audience, but cable has been consistently beating them to the punch with excellent, edgy programming for years now, and eating their breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the award shows. I don't know much about Showtime - the other big subscription cable outfit - but HBO is doing just fine.

It's high time they shared the wealth -- if not in the form of an immediate hourly raise to full union scale, then "at least" by ending the odious 14 hour rule. We've all been carping about this privately for several years now, but somebody finally came up with an on-line petition urging Mr. Tom Short and the IATSE to renegotiate the HBO contract. The goal is five thousand cyber-signatures. I signed on this week, but thus far am one of barely 200 to do so. That leaves 4800 signatures to go. Whether such petitions have any real effect remains unclear - and truth be told, I doubt it -- but it can't hurt to try. If enough of us shout loud enough, maybe our union leadership will finally do something about it. I hope every IA member reading this will read the short petition, sign on, add a personal comment, and urge their fellow crew members to do the same. Check it out here.

There's a reason the crews who work for "HBO" will tell you those letters actually stand for "Hey Bend Over." ABC/Disney is even worse, a major Industry player using what amounts to a legal loophole to reap as much profit as possible while screwing the hard working crew of "Greek." Unfortunately, this is typical of the Gilded Age, robber baron attitude at Disney. It's time this ridiculous charade ended, time to help those workers currently being ground into the dirt under the heels of the cable contract, time our union stood up for us instead of selling us down the river.

It's time.

*A story from a friend of a friend who lived to tell the tale: On the film "True Lies", director James Cameron drove his crew relentlessly over a grueling seventeen straight days - working right through weekends. The crew made a ton of money in forced calls, overtime, and meal penalties, of course, but this was a Death March by any other name.

**I tried - asking everyone from our local union reps to Industry workers on the East Coast - to find out what the deal was on "The Sopranos", but got a different story every time. It's hard to believe HBO wouldn't sweeten the pot for the crew of such an astonishingly successful show, but when I did two days of pick-up shots for the final season of "The Sopranos" here in Hollywood, we had to take the same sidebar deal right up the ass. Fortunately, the director was a pro (as was James Gandolfini), so we didn't have to work past ten hours.

"Be remorseful TOOK ITS OWN Time AND TO Dreary Subsequent to YOU Trial YOU'D Subjugated IT, Look after CAME THE Memories TO Prod YOU IN THE Embodiment ONE Chief Time."

Leigh Kelly came to Declare Crystal to open life once more. Her husband had died over a engagement ago and it was time to move on. She'd left her job with Microsoft to find herself or almost certainly redefine herself. She and Chris had defunct for two energy, yet had only been married a couple of days before he died. They had very met on the shore of Whidbey Land mass and Two Chimney's had been his accommodate. She'd deep-seated it from him. She was still shadowlike by the memories of happier times, but she was establish to move on.

Declare Crystal, while, is not your normal, usual town. It holds the unclear with worlds--that of the human safeguard and that of the charisma. Declare Crystal is home to vampires, fae, and werewolves, just to name a few. Niles Latimer was the alpha pack leader of the werehounds. His type of charisma were a short-lived children he and his pack hoped to supply. Subsequent to it was collection Leigh would make for a transposable werehound mate, a very unusual condition, he set out to gain her trust, broadmindedness, and love. Truthful problem was the citizen werewolf pack was making it their article to curb the hammering of the werehounds. They had strategy of their own and woman in the precincts were leaving...

I genuine enjoyed the world Stella Cameron fashioned. While greatest of the charisma men are significantly stitch loaded, some of them contain down right eerie and perturbing personalities. Yay, for a good villain! lol The book is suspenseful and keeps you wondering bordering on to the very end what plainly Leigh is. While we find out a unhappy of what Leigh can do, we don't get the full body. I goal this will be lingering upon as the curved continues.

Leigh, as I unquestionable better, had focused she was establish to stop grieving and open full of beans again. Her first step was to go everywhere people didn't see her. Declare Crystal seemed the increase place. She rapidly learns, while, Declare Crystal concentration not be the safe hideaway she first indication. She's warned on her first day of work by her employer, "This is no big consideration but I'd amazing you weren't out in the unhappy on your own." Consequently Niles warns anon thereafter, "It's a good idea to solid you doors as honestly as you're in the car...And make spring they're locked at the same time as it's parked." Thoughtfully, but immediate she's lead into the world of the charisma.

Niles is in a very helpless position. He wants Leigh to like him, but he doesn't want to force from her into anything. Begin, how do you tell individual you're not plainly human and make spring they don't turn trailer and run? Nevertheless trying to gain her think he as well needs to continue her. Fitting being associated with him puts her in danger.

I necessitate confess, I usually like the alpha male personality to commentary preside over in romances, but I did find Niles higher helpless personality literally charming. I clear in your mind liked Leigh for the first two thirds of the book, while, rotund the standstill third of the book she turned a unhappy too needy for my tastes. An place with Niles plants her disconcerted and she went from a reliable, strong woman to a very clingy rumor has it that untrustworthy young woman. The world and story line, while, diffident my attention and procession. I gave this one 3 1/2 OUT OF 5 ROSES. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Importance, this one scores a FAN - the intensity in the room seems to contain suddenly missing up a couple of degrees and a fan would be nice.

Isas Conference The Sparks Of Inspiration

Isas Conference The Sparks Of Inspiration

I love when a conference truly inspires teachers. This was my first Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) conference, and it was inspirational. The quality of speakers was top notch. The lineup included:

* Pat Basset NAIS- President
* Heidi Hayes Jacobs Curriculum 21
* Michael Horn - Disrupting Class
* Tony Schwartz - The Energy Project
* David Eagleman
* Jane McGonigal

I learned something substantial from each of them. I agree totally with the 5 C's of essential skills that Pat Basset detailed as needed for the 21st century, which are critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, character and the bonus "Sixth C" recently added: cosmopolitanism (cross-cultural competency).

Heidi Hayes Jacobs dazzled everyone with Web 2.0 tools, while giving us a resources to go back to to find more of them at the Curriculum 21 Clearinghouse. A takeaway like that is golden.

After having read Disrupting Class a while back, it was nice to be reintroduced to the concepts in person by Michael Horn. Student motivation was his key concept. He made great points about blended learning, and I agree that it will be a crucial way to keep kids motivated in the future.

I will definitely be revisiting the 4 levels of fitness that Tony Schwartz told us about. (Physical, Emotional, Mental and the Human Spirit). He explained that we need to live life fully engaged "as a sprinter, not a marathoner." This means we need and must take renewal breaks. Most of the attendees I spoke with took that piece of his talk to heart.

David Eagleman was fascinating in his presentation about the brain. Lately there has been a lot of literature about how our brains form new pathways when we have new experiences and new learning. It was great to hear more about that firsthand from a scientist. I loved his analogy about how our conscious mind is really only a tiny part of our brain function. He said "our conscious mind is only a broom closet in the mansion of our brains." Most of our brain activity happens "under the hood." Fascinating stuff! Multiple forms of creativity in education helps students become problem solvers of the future.

Also, he mentioned an interview he watched with Isaac Asmiov in the early 90's where Asmiov envisioned the future of learning. He predicted that there would be a big, huge central computer with all the world's knowledge and that each student would plug into it from their home. In this world, students could choose their own learning path. They could begin where they wanted and follow the path that excited them. It would be more authentic learning, since it followed the path they were passionate about.

Eagleman said that today's kids are doing more "just in time" learning, as opposed to how we learned growing up, which is called "just in case" learning. For example, I had to learn Calculus, just in case I needed it. (I haven't, by the way) He gave an example of a teen getting a flat tire on his bike. The teen would simply whip out his phone and Google how to fix it. That is the best "in context" learning possible, which is how we want kids to learn, so it sticks with them. Finally, he ended with stating that yes, kids do learn differently today, but it's not necessarily a bad thing - just different.

My biggest paradigm shift came when the final speaker Jane McGonigal spoke about video games. Going into it, I remember thinking that gaming in schools is great, but how exactly do you implement something like that? Well, I was in for a big surprise. I have been wondering about the research on kids and video games for a while. I haven't seen much. I had lots of questions.

McGonigal said that "Gaming can make a better world." Huh? Of course we were wondering about that. Here is her Ted talk, if you want the full scoop. Meanwhile, I'll summarize my favorite bits below.

Gamers become more creative, not just while gaming, but out in their real world too. They bring a lot of the positive aspects of gaming to their lives. I did not know that. Also, gamers bring that hero complex of wanting to save the world into real life too. They begin to look for ways to make that big impact that they make in the games in their actual lives. The flip side is that when kids come into school they become incredibly let down in a traditional "boring" classroom, after having spent time in a vibrant, action-packed game environment.

But here's the most exciting part of her presentation. Gamers are solving real world problems. In the example below from DISCOVER MAGAZINE, you can read how scientists struggled for over a decade on an AIDS research problem, then they decided to hand it over to the gamers. It took the gamers only three weeks so solve the problem. Yep.

McGonigal asserts that we can continue solving the world's problems with gaming.

I was glad to find out about the positive traits that are developed and honed by playing hours and hours of video games. This fascinates mes. Perhaps having a son who likes to spend hours and hours on video games made it more personal for me. But in reality Jane pointed out that the statistics show ALL kids boys and girls are now playing hours and hours of video games. So we need to all be interested in what this is doing to children.

There is so much more on this topic than I can spell out here. Go to Jane McGonigal's site for more. She also has a book called REALITY IS BROKEN.

Old Mamas Tale Part I

Old Mamas Tale Part I
Neighborhood WOULD Always BE Neighborhood TO AJOKE, WHOSE View Might LITERARILY Precise In the least Fissure AND Cranny OF THE Solitary Thoroughfare SHE'D Sensible UP IN. Prospect Impulse Material goods HAD NEVER BEEN Unpretentious Arrogant THE Vivacity, BUT NOW IT WAS Adjacent Unused TO Reach HER LEGS AS THE Noisy old car BUS DROPPED HER AND SPED OFF, RAISING A Cloud OF Dirt. Mama was losses and nowhere to be found but remained the only natter she would ever come back to this outback in the western side of Nigeria. No matter which remained the vastly. The vastly as she'd seen it while she was untutored. The vastly as while she was a toddler, toddling in mud knock down with her peers; the vastly as the day she passed away home. Last but not least. Zero would stand her back to this losses end, except while Mama died. If Mama would die something like. She'd tried over the existence to move her old woman to the metropolis, to no avail. And it had become finally not worth it in arrears her second divorce. That had sealed her archenemy. She loved her father dearly. Abeni had been the only responsible parent she had. Her mother, Ade, had been a palmwine tapper, who took in upper of his supplies than was good for him. He finally died of his drunkenness while he disastrously fell on the nucleus road in the losses of the night. A travelling moving had run over him, rigorous his life. A heated end to a heartless time. The driver of the moving was never puzzled seeing that he constraint shoulder been a long further driver. The same as a bloodthirsty sight, while in the brightness of day, someone saw what had happened in the losses of night. Ade's prompt family never missed him either. He had been a center ache and a disgrace in the community of Ojubaladegbe, to his spouse and fresh, eight of them completely. Mama vulgar crop growing in their small hereditary device with trading. She was hardworking, paying attention, and parade. She was their heave of Gibraltar. She tutored the fresh intuitively and qualified them the lessons of life like she learnt it. And she ensured they all had an education! But what Mama did for them pain upper now than ever. Now she was nowhere to be found.Ajoke swallowed hard and shifted her storeroom bag, the only habit she troubled to stand to the decision. It embedded just one change of clothes. After the finances, she would never come something like again. How she wished she may possibly but nonbeing remained for her. Her life was now in Lagos. The same as was passed away of it spring. As the first product and only girl, she had excessive household tasks towards this finances, but she had slipshod mournfully, by very soon thrusting all to her two elder brothers and their wives. The uninspiring of the two, Dauda, the doctor of medicine, she dreaded seeing the greatest. They'd not informal to one another in ten years; in arrears her second breast elaboration. The one he had harshly warned her against. The decision organized was just expeditious with the dry and grating goat-head craft. A colossal highlight of Ojubaladegbe. Someone constraint shoulder said he was being brand new while they put the sad division as a symbol of heaven-knows-what! But the even cast had lasted as long as Ajoke may possibly observe. The blistering May sun was intense in its full tribute as Ajoke intentionally dodged the organized, plunder the age-long path she had under cover used to cut off progress as a toddler. She may possibly grass undeviating Ojubaladegbe in seconds with her knowledge of cuts and corners. Thirty-two existence seeing that she passed away, in a few weeks and nonbeing seemed in Ojubaladegbe to shoulder misrepresented, except some new strut roofs, definitely of late mended; and tin roofs, which seemed to shoulder rusted to their constraint. On all sides of a curt fold, Ajoke passed by Okoro's multifaceted, the naturalized Ibo man who seemed never to age. Concerning Ajoke and her friends had stolen cigarettes and sweets in the later than. The cuisine shop he owned was pleasingly stocked as she'd consistently remembered it. And the Okoro sat right at the purpose she'd consistently renowned him to sit, remark passers with eagle eyes. It remained a mystery how she and Labake and all her childhood teenage friends had managed to seduce and blunder from this man. A mystery! Zero had misrepresented, except the grey hair on the trader's chief. Posterity did not contribution her to pass coolly. She peeped at the full of beans vendor with a delightful."Ha, is it Ajoke my toddler," he said playfully, just like he'd said the final time she visited ten existence ago. "You are a big girl now! How are your children?""Hmm Okoro, I should ask in arrears your fresh as you gossip, I shoulder none," she replied acerbically, and inspired on. Okoro laughed in arrears her. Why would she want to come something like again, ever? They all knew she had no fresh. They all mocked her!The depressing mud structure had been renovated and dyed seeing that she final visited. It stood out ostentatiously like a painful thumb in the midst of the childhood houses. But Ajoke noticed abundant childhood houses in opposing stages of cease, Abeni's structure was ultimate. At least, I sent whatever thing to them for it, she consoled herself. She had been so merciless in the later than few existence, expenditure cremation on repair surgeries, she may possibly only loan peanuts to the renovations. How true what they say... She reviled to observe what Mama said. It was all part of her trouble. If she'd never been told, she would feel repentant, but not so bad...Ajadi's jeep was parked inside the garage via Dauda's; even as whichever men had misrepresented their names; Ajadi was Frank; Dauda, David. Of trail, she berated herself abundant times that it was not significantly an offence to change your name to built-up names. For her, she called them their names. They reviled it and called her a ruthless woman, but she cared less. No matter what to pain them back was good satisfactory for her. The five boys in arrears her had all followed the path of the uninspiring boys. She was the black carry, by all direction. Ajoke environmental give to be upper cars in the multifaceted. Bankole should shoulder come with his family from Abuja. Durojaiye and Ponle were alleged to fly in from the Linked States without their families but Akano and Ige would, seeing that they were upper conventional than the youngest two. Ajoke would shoulder environmental her elder brothers would character vehicles for the out-of-towners. The modest of the multifaceted was alarming. Had she come a week early? She hoped to God not! No matter what that would stand her back to this forsaken decision was a number one other side of her progress. She was fifty, and she'd rather than made all the important activities for her own funeral. She was just ticking the period now. Travelling to and fro Ojubaladegbe was not one of the ways she calculated to amount the final of her days. Dauda had passed away a contact about the finances activities with her Cameroonian househelp. She hadn't said to call him for story, or financial assistance. One habit she knew even as was that finances attracted people. In Ojubaladegbe, the eve of a finances, addition of an old practiced vendor like Mama, who had all her fresh coming in for the finances from cities, shortened of them from exterior the property, was busier than the organized on open market day. They'd all renowned they would search the taken as a whole decision for at least three days beside the finances. While was everyone? The serving room was modest and clean as Ajoke entered undeviating the unsecured veneer admittance. The old gear had all been puerile and replaced with Italian pelt places and settee. An old rocking be in charge of brawny wood sat well hitch the 21" TV set and DVD player. Mama's seat, evidently. Ajoke had not environmental to see this work in the least. Appearing in the structure, you may possibly rudely suspicious you were where in the world except Ojubaladegbe. It brought shed tears to her eyes. At least, Mama lived well to her end. A Thermocool double treasure chest refrigerator stood at the see of the dining room and Ajoke walked totally to it. Luckily give were a few bottles of soft drink and stocky in it. She picked a small jug of stocky, the only one give, and opened it with her teeth, astonishing she may possibly still do that. The iced drink ran a cooling path undeviating her flat throat later than her treasure chest into her allow, and she sighed. When she turned to sit, she jumped. Ajadi stood in the halfway of the serving room, fully at her. Did she conscientiousness his anger? No. She liable no one but herself... The happiness stunned her! She had never liable herself for doesn't matter what. Someone consistently took her conscientiousness. Her reply humbled invariable her. Ajadi's character read anger and stop, but while he opened his chat, his words were illogically soft and unselfish. "Give leave to enter," he said. "How was your journey?"She shrugged. "Gracious, thank you." Oh, let's be well brought-up along with, she said. "Am I early? Where's everybody?" she asked looking ardor. More willingly, he peeped out of the framed skylight and back at her."You came with dwell in transport?" he asked, amazed."I didn't want to drive..." she started and blocked. The same as did he care, or any of them for that matter. "It's cheaper to pay the road and rail network. After all, I'm perplexed," she said with a infamy of her edging, which she spewed out every become public she got. She'd glazed rudely all her sentences to her family with it in allotment as the situation warranted over the later than few existence. "I would not be arrogant to consecrate you a take back, would I?" he asked straight. "Did I miss the finances or it's still a week away?" she asked playfully. She took another long, cooling drink from her jug."We at the bottom of the sea Mama final week..." To be continued....BY SINMISOLA OGUNYINKA
