Its A Marathon

Its A Marathon
I have had many calls and emails over the last few weeks from friends, family and some of our certified NLP delegates who have been pounding out the 26.2 miles of a marathon. I would like to offer my congratulations to everyone who has been running, be it an ultra, a full or a half marathon so far this year. Having personally only ever run a 10k, which my son disparagingly likes to keep pointing out is less than a quarter of a Marathon, I know that running further than that is a considerable achievement. What was really interesting is that a couple of our NLP delegates who recently run the marathon were able to beat their personal best time and put this down to the NLP techniques they learnt during the training they attended. People undertake marathons and other endurance events for many reasons; personal achievement being just one of them and fund raising for charities is another common motivation. Life often runs in unexpected directions and if illness or misfortune touches your life then embarking on something like a marathon is a way of giving back or even fighting back. This year's London Marathon contained some personal stories which really stand out. Claire Lomas, who broke her back in a riding accident, completed the marathon in 16 days with the assistance of a "bionic" suit, and you will of course remember Claire Squires who died before the end of the race and has since raised over a million pounds for her charity. The marathon race was introduced in the first modern Olympics in 1896 and was inspired by the Greek courier, Pheidippides. He supposedly ran from the Battlefield of Marathon to Athens to inform the City of the Greek victory over Persia and died immediately after delivering his message. The battle of Marathon was fought in 490 BCE and is cited by historians as the event that ushered in rise of Classical Greece and was significant for the rise of Western Society. One historian even suggesting that Marathon was more significant to British history than the battle of Hastings. You see it's only with the passage of time that events in history can be put into proper context. Right now Greece sits once more at the forefront of the World events as this financial crisis that we are witnessing continues to twist and turn. The full long term significance of these events has not yet played out for us, so what it means and even where it goes remains to be seen. Your own life will have had many twists and turns too. You will have had many successes and maybe some setbacks too. Sometimes it is only as we progress through our lives that the meaning of these events plays out in their entirety for us. That job you didn't get, that relationship which didn't quite flourish, that illness you endured, the loved one that you lost. These events are sometimes best viewed in the longer, greater context of your life. It's not always easy to complete a jigsaw without all of the pieces or even without the picture. Whatever its meaning may be, you are running the race of your life and that race is a marathon and not sprint. Our NLP Trainings give people the tools and skills to run in this life race much more effectively. So ask yourself, how is your race going? Are you striving on, pushing yourself further and enjoying the exhilaration of your achievement, or do you feel like you have hit the "wall". Wherever you are in your journey, know that you are in this for the long haul, draw a deep breath, lift your head and lengthen your stride and think of your reasons for running this race. You may not know this but anthropologists now believe that humans are specifically evolved to run and run and run. So come on get up and run, run with a purpose.
