Until women do the internal work necessary to look at why they're attracted to these men and to avoid choosing these men in the future, they will be forever unhappy in their relationships. The last thing women want to do, however, is look at their own issues. Too many women instead, get stuck focusing on the men's issues and trying to change the men. They chase emotionally shut down men and beg them to talk, plead with abusive men to not be so abusive, complain to workaholics to stop working and on and on. Unfortunately this focus on others is what keeps the women stuck in the same bad patterns for years. Until the women turn their focus on getting themselves healthier, they will continue to attract the same men and get stuck in the same dysfunctional relationship patterns forever.
Women tune in: If women are not relationally healthy, they will be attracted to others who are also not relationally healthy. There is no way around this truth. We attract people who are on the same level of health as we are. If we want healthy relationships, we have to get relationally healthy.* If we're desperate--we'll sell our souls* If we live in fear-we won't allow ourselves to see.* If we don't think we're deserving-we will settle.* If we're too reactive-we will keep others and the world at bay.The good news in this truth is that women have control of their destinies. Women decide what type of relationships they have. Women have the power to step out of old patterns and instead create new patterns that are healthy and loving. When women have the courage to take their eyes off others and look at themselves, their lives and relationships can change. When they begin to choose differently, respond differently and love themselves enough to not settle, their lives will change.Stop twisting yourself into a pretzel to get the men in your life to love you. Be a loving partner. Be accountable for your actions. Be cherishing and respectful at all times. And...accept nothing less from others. Don't try to change him-you don't have that power. Invite him into your life and use a grounded strength to stand up for yourself. Let him know you would love to have him share your life with you as long as he is also loving, cherishing, accountable and respectful. If he chooses not to be these things, let him know you are sad...and you will miss him. Be clear that settling for anything less than the above is not in your life plan. Stand behind this sentiment your entire life. You deserve to be treated well-as do others. Treat others well and accept nothing less. Challenge: If you have a history of bad relationships look back over that history with a new eye. Look at your piece in all the problems. What are the old moves you've done that have not served you? The advantage of getting advice from forums is that you can ask questions anonymously and get opinions from a variety of people who'll most likely have very different view points from you. The lack of real-time interaction means you don't get the back-and-forth dialogue you'd need to really get to the root of your problems and find a workable solution.

It's one of the first thing well meaning friends ask when you admit your marriage is on the rocks: "Have you thought of counseling?" There's good reason for that. A professional marriage counselor has training in resolving marital conflicts and many years of experience working with different types of couples and problems.
The trouble you usually run into here is that one spouse doesn't want to go. Usually, that partner believes the marriage has already flat-lined and any attempt to revive it is a waste of time and energy. If you're partner feels that way, don't give up just yet. While you want to avoid pressuring or begging, simple logic can work wonders.
Counseling can help, of course, but it's not a cure-all. Did you know the average marriage councilors' success rate is only around 30%? That's hardly enough to make it worth shouting "Help me save my marriage!" at the counselor.

"A WORD TO WORRIED PARENTS:"
I was once the anorexic daughter that parents worry about. Now that I'm recovered from anorexia and can look at the situation clearly, it's easy for me to articulate what might be needed and wanted-from the point of view of the sufferer.
Okay, let's be honest; both parties are suffering.
I feel the best thing you can do for your daughter (or son) is to love her and support her, which you obviously do if you are reading this. Try to understand her. She is probably feeling as though not many people do, but all you have to do is let her know that you WANT to understand. That you care enough about her to want to help her in any way you can. And that you will always be there for her when and if she needs you.
Don't be obtrusive. Don't be harsh. Sometimes it takes a big wake up call to make someone snap to the realization that they are really damaging themselves, but try to be the rock she can turn to when she is faltering. There are plenty of ways to show her the error of her ways without punishing her, condemning her, or making her feel worse.
My parents did good things and bad things. But it's hard for parents-and for anyone-to know how to deal with an eating disordered child, especially when that child is actually a young woman and not a child any longer.
"Ask" her if she wants you to do anything. "Ask" her if she wants freedom, support, more recovery resources, info about a support group, a shoulder to cry on, etc. Perhaps she wants nothing. Perhaps she doesn't know what she wants. But if it was me (and it "was" me once), I would greatly appreciate having my mother or father pose those questions to me.
If she's been in treatment: Just because a treatment place did not work for her in the past doesn't mean she can't get help or will be resistant to other forms of support. One thing that really helped me while I was a college student was going to a support group with other young women who were facing the same problems. We learned to want to help each other, which in turn helped us to help ourselves. If she cares about the well-being of other girls like her, she may invest time in a path towards recovery and soon start to hear what they are saying-and use what she is telling them on herself and her own situation.
Sometimes eating disorder support groups are not publicized and are hard to discover. Ask your local hospitals, do a search online, or contact an eating disorder specialist for info. "Don't push"...but it's always worth keeping in the back of your mind.
I really feel for your situation. I have a very good relationship with my mother and I know how helpless she felt when I was very ill.
Be there to listen to your daughter, but if she doesn't want to talk, "don't press". All you can do is try your best to help her and the rest is up to her. No one can make her do anything-and if they do, it will only be temporary. She needs to make a choice for herself and set goals.
But you can support her in these goals.
